The Basics of Shame and How to Cope With It

What is shame?

Shame is an extreme level of self-consciousness. It happens due to self-critical and negative thoughts. Shame is seen as a self-conscious emotion since it is brought on by inward reflection and self-criticism.

These self-evaluations may produce either good or negative sentiments of confidence or shame, representing the two opposite ends of the self-conscious emotion continuum.  Individuals who suffer from shame feel extremely bad, incompetent, or worthless as a result of their self-evaluation.

Learn effective ways through which you can cope with it without any issues.

Acknowledge shame

In order to cope with shame, you first need to acknowledge it and confirm whether you are feeling shame or not or is something else. At times, it may seem like you are feeling shame, but in reality, it is not.

It can be anger, depression, stress, or any other feeling that you may assume is a feeling of shame. It could take considerable reflection to recognize that some enduringly difficult feelings are caused by shame.
By probing further into these feelings, you can learn more.

Mindfulness techniques

Avoid falling victim to the harsh and judgmental emotions and tales that are linked to shame. These can feed the emotion and therefore can create it more severe and long-lasting. Shame can indeed be lessened by utilizing mindfulness.

You can do that easily by increasing your awareness of the current moment by concentrating on breathing, on your senses, or by giving a task your entire concentration and energy.

Try to open up

Believe me, this is really an effective way of coping with shame and can certainly help you heal most effectively.

Don't hide the shame but try to open up about it; share what you are feeling with someone who you can trust.

It can either be a close friend, family member, or even your therapist

They can help you by giving you some hope and by relaxing you.

Your therapist can give you some useful pieces of advice as to how you should deal with these feelings of shame.

Be self compassionate

Wouldn't that be great if you treated yourself with a little bit more kindness and accepted yourself the way you are? With the help of self-compassion, you can resist the voices of the inner critic and allow a more positive and better voice inside you to emerge that will make sure you do not feel bad about yourself.

Trust me, even in situations where you are feeling stressed, and shame is overtaking you, talking yourself with positivity would help you get through that tough time.

Self-compassion is no doubt a significant part of self-care.

Don't give up

There is no need to worry if any such feeling is disturbing you from the inside.

Just stay positive, find some good support, follow the aforementioned techniques, and eliminate the feeling of guilt and shame.
